Employee Engagement
Employee engagement is a workplace approach that creates the appropriate conditions for all employees to give their best every day, committed to their organization's goals and values, motivated to contribute to organizational success, and feeling better about themselves. It is a concept in human resources (HR) that describes a worker's level of excitement and dedication to their job.
Organizations may benefit from staff that are willing to go beyond expectations and achieve higher financial performance by creating a culture that allows people to engage in their work (Baumruk, 2006).
Drivers of employee engagement
Following possible drivers helps to understand the factors that influence the level of employee engagement (Armstrong, 2014).
Job challenge: It enhances engagement by providing opportunities for achievement and personal development when the job responsibility is high and the workload is heavy.
Autonomy gives you a sense of control and ownership over your work.
Variety: opportunities for individuals to participate in a wide range of activities or to apply a wide range of skills.
Feedback is information on a person's reaction to a product or their performance of a task.
Fit: Fit refers to a person's compatibility with their work environment, which allows them to act in ways that are consistent with how they feel or want to see themselves.
Opportunities for development: They offer opportunities for employee development and achievement.
Rewards and recognition: These are both direct and indirect rewards for a personal investment of time in performing a job role.
Why is engagement important?
Because they understand their role and purpose in the organization and what the factors are for the success of the company, engaged employees are more likely to look at the broader picture. According to Smith and Markwick (2009), employee engagement is very important to all organizations as follows.
Staff turnover has been reduced from a high level to a low level.
Higher productivity
Improved attendance
Improve your work and customer relationships.
The factors that affect engagement
Job design: As Herzberg (1968) remarked, "If you want someone to do a good job, give them a good job to do." Job design effects the high level of performance, motivation, and employee satisfaction.
The work environment: A strategy for increasing job engagement through the work environment depends on positive attitudes towards work, promoting interest and excitement in the jobs people do, and reducing stress.
Learning and development programmes: people are given the opportunity to learn and improve in their roles, as well as encouragement to do so.
Developing engagement through rewards: Suitable reward practices and processes, both financial and non-financial, and managed in combination, can help to improve employee engagement.
What are the work outcomes of employee engagement?
Conclusion
Employee engagement is an important factor of productivity, profitability, and employee retention, and it can pay dividends. Workers who are engaged are invested in the company's success and actively seek to achieve strategic goals. To enhance employee engagement, HR leaders and managers must understand what matters to employees, such as their well-being, work-life balance, attractive work environment, and repayment.
