Recruitment and selection process

Introduction

Recruitment and selection are an important process in HRM. Selecting the most suitable candidates for the organization is the main purpose of this process.

The recruitment and selection process can be defined as the process of finding qualified candidates for vacant positions and encouraging them to apply for jobs. The candidates must have the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to qualify for the vacant positions. Educational qualifications, competences, aptitude, personality qualities, experience, and job needs are the factors that must be considered while implementing these functions. (UKessays, 2018).

Recruiting policies, advertising, job descriptions, the job application process, interviews, evaluation, decision-making, legislative selection, and training are the steps of the recruitment process, which can be conducted internally or externally or even online.

It helps to create a pool of candidates suitable for the vacancy for the organization's gain.

To attract more applicants at a minimum cost.

It helps to succeed in the selection process by reducing the number of applicants.

 

It affects the performance of the organization directly as skilled employees contribute their best to achieve the goals of the organization.

Cost-saving process as it helps to reduce unnecessary wastage of money.

Recruitment and selection process in modern workplace

Digital transformation has affected the above process in many ways. The organizations developed new ways to process applications and interviews with suitable applicants, and it helps to save both cost and time. The following methods are a few of the methods for the recruitment and selection process of a modern workplace(HRimprovers, 2021).

  1. Artificial intelligence: (AI) helps to enhance the quality of recruitment, select the right candidates, save time, and improve the organization’s status.
  1. Innovative Interview Techniques—A time-saving process for both the employer and the candidate, as even if the candidate lives far away, it can be processed as a group interview, phone interview, or video interview (Skype / Google Hangouts).

  1. Social Media: A growing process helps to identify the suitable applicants. Many networks, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, can benefit from this strategy.

 Recruitment and Selection Process in Banks

Most of the banks in Sri Lanka follow written exams and interviews for this process. When vacancies created, they publish the job advertisement through newspapers, internal sources, company web sites and e-recruitment methods. Seeking for applications with curriculum vitae, evaluation of training and experience, knowledge tests, behavioral interviews, face to face interviews and medical tests are some of the selection strategies used by banks.

Most of the time banks take every effort to fill vacancies internally except at the entry level. The banks may turn to external recruiting if they couldn’t find a team member for specialized positions. The ability to advance professionally is an important factor to consider when hiring as banks always try to build up a long term partnership with talented employees to achieve their goals as well as maintain statutory standards of the country.



Conclusion

Effective recruitment and selection can make an organization's success. This is very important as the decision on recruitment and selection affects the identification of the most experienced and suitable candidates. Most organizations are moving towards adopting the new methods of recruiting and selecting candidates in a modern environment.

    According to Artificial Intelligence, as you mentioned, my opinion is even the best Artificial Intelligence-based system has difficulty assessing the soft skills of the applicant. Even the Applicant may become frustrated with it.
